Toowoomba State High School is a wonderful School.
Over the last few years it became clear to us that the community was seeing that we were doing quite a lot of special things. Most importantly people recognised that we DO care about the achievement of students in the whole range of endeavours AND we have developed innovative ways of supporting and motivating young people AND they achieve well, attaining their goals and objectives as set out in their Senior Education and Training Plan.
Our School will never be too big to lose sight of the needs of young people and their families. We have split our School into two campuses so that the needs of early adolescents can be better met in Years 8,9 & 10. All of our kids transition really well to Senior Schooling opportunities in year 11 and 12 - Wilsonton Campus and Mt Lofty campus students from year 10 participate in an excellent subject counselling, curriculum familiarisation and transition program.
Local primary school students spend a lot of time on campus and when their turn comes for Year 8, they feel comfortable and know many of the teachers already. We work with teachers in our cluster to develop a meaningful curriculum across years 7 and 8. We are leading the state in student leadership development activities.
We have been pioneering many new approaches to Senior Schooling with outstanding University preparation programs and links, special programs targeting skill shortage areas such as auto mechanics and construction as well as over 100 students completing traineeships in a very diverse range of fields. Courses are individually tailored for almost every student. School has come a long way from the factory approach where 'one size fits all'. We closely monitor each student's achievement and development and work closely with them and their families to plan for improvement. All of our efforts are about achieving an improvement in participation and outcomes.
Things have certainly changed over the last few years and the best thing to do is come in to the School - either campus - and have a chat and tour.
